Cosmetic Dentistry
Do you ever look in the mirror and wish your smile was better? Smile makeovers can be accomplished in many different ways. How your smile is remade will depend upon your individually desired outcome and the condition of your teeth and lips.
Simple makeover
Rehabilitating your smile may be a simple matter of getting your teeth cleaned, whitening or bleaching your teeth and replacing old discolored fillings. If your teeth are well aligned, and do not require repositioning, these procedures may be all that is required to return your smile to its best. Minor spaces between the teeth and minor blemishes on the teeth may be corrected with bonding procedures after the teeth have been lightened.
The Next Level
Maybe your teeth are in pretty good condition but are significantly crowded. Or perhaps you have a severe overbite. If so, your teeth will probably require some kind of orthodontic or tooth movement process to correct the problem. Conventional braces are often recommended.
Today we offer other forms of tooth movement using invisible braces. The most common of these treatments are invisalign and clear correct. These therapies work well for many people, but are not always appropriate for more complex cases. You can expect a treatment time ranging from six months to three years to complete orthodontic treatment. Also most orthodontic treatments require some effort and involvement on your behalf for success.
A Complete Smile Makeover
If you have severely worn, broken, or discolored teeth, or teeth with multiple large fillings we may recommend cosmetic crowns or veneers for your teeth. All irregularities in the teeth as well as minor spacing and alignment problems can be corrected with cosmetic crowns or veneers. If major alignment problems exist orthodontic treatment may be recommended in conjunction with cosmetic restorations.
Today’s cosmetic restorations are vastly improved over those of years ago. Introduction of new ceramic materials which are more life-like and durable have enabled us to offer a variety of beautiful, naturally appearing restorations for teeth. Use of these new materials often allows the complete elimination of metals from the restoration. Among the best of these new materials are two products called Lava and Emax. We use both of these materials extensively to produce our best cosmetic restorations.
Veneer types may include a no preparation veneer, a minimal preparation veneer, or a full preparation veneer. Each of these veneer types as the name implies requires differing amounts of tooth surface removal to be accomplished. While it may seem like a very good idea to do a veneer without removing any tooth structure, many times the desired cosmetic outcomes cannot be achieved without removing a significant amount of tooth structure. Improper use of “no-prep” veneers can result in over contoured or “bulky” appearing teeth and cause recession of the gum tissue.
Cosmetic Work-Up
In our office, before difficult cosmetic procedures are undertaken, Dr. Watson will make models of the teeth, take photos of the smile and teeth and gather other diagnostic information before proceeding with treatment. Usually a wax mock-up of the proposed treatment will be done so that the results of reshaping and realignment can be evaluated. This will give you the opportunity to get a good idea of how your smile will look after treatment is completed.
